Restaurant Review: Nosh at the Hammock Shops

The empty restaurant at the Pawleys Island Hammock Shops has a new tenant. The site, formerly High Hammock, Louis’s at Pawleys, Tyler’s Cove and the Pawleys Island Inn, is now going to be called Nosh. The chef is David Bardari, who used to have a Pawleys Island business called Community House Restaurant. Chef Bardari returns to Pawleys Island after a 10 year absence.

Cafe Piccolo Opening Soon

Wednesday, July 21, 2010, Pawleys Island – Jimmy Pronesti, who formerly owned Bella Napoli in Socastee, is opening a new Italian restaurant in Pawleys Island.

Caffee Piccolo is scheduled to open by the end of July at 9428 Ocean Highway, in the space at To Your Health formerly occupied by Chive Blossom Cafe before Chive Blossom moved up the street to a bigger location.

But Caffee Piccolo will have room for 32 diners inside and 16 outside on a cozy little patio surrounded by greenery. Pronesti has been working for months to renovate the space, and now there is fresh paint on the walls and floor and stunning mosaic tiles on the bar.

The cafe will be open for lunch and dinner. For lunch Pronesti plans to serve a variety of panini such as the Panino Americano (panini is the plural of panino, Pronesti explained) with chicken, prosciutto, roasted red peppers, mozzarella and pesto; or the Panino Pizzaiola with pesto, mozzarella, pepperoni, black olives and marinara.

The patio adds another 16 seats to Caffe Piccolo. The patio adds another 16 seats to Caffe Piccolo.

Lunch will also include a variety of salads such as one with fennel, blood oranges and citrus mint vinaigrette; arugula and fried gorgonzola with pine nuts, red onion and lemon vinaigrette; or asparagus salad with hard-boiled eggs and Dijon vinaigrette.

Many of those same salads will also be offered for dinner along with appetizers such as Seared Diver Scallops served over Tuscan white bean puree topped with bacon and wilted arugula; and Crabcakes with Avocado Salsa.

A couple of entrees Pronesti has planned include Pistachio-encrusted Fresh Haddock served over spinach with a lemon butter sauce; and Veal Saltimbocca with prosciutto, sage and house-made mozzarella in a shiitake sherry reduction.

“And we’ll have house-made pastas like fettucine and seasonal raviolis,” Pronesti said on July 15 while taking a break from his renovations. “For desserts there’ll be Raspberry Tiramisu, Limoncello Cheesecake and seasonal desserts like Fresh Watermelon with Citrus Mascarpone.”

Caffee Piccolo, which means “small cafe,” does not yet have a phone line installed. Jimmy Pronesti can be reached at (843) 283-1141.
