Things to Do: Harvest Home Weekend Festival @ Brookgreen Gardens

Brookgreen Gardens’ annual Harvest Home Weekend Festival will be held this year from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday Oct. 12 and 13.

It’s a great outing for families, and will include activities such as pumpkin painting, hayrides and scarecrow building. The festival is free with garden admission, and food and live music are also on the agenda.

This is the 15th year of the Harvest Home Festival, and every year about 5,000 people enjoy the event. You can bring your own old clothes down to make a scarecrow in your likeness, and if you have room, you can even take yours home for $5! The pumpkin painting is another favorite event. Brookgreen supplies the paint, you only have to buy your pumpkin!

Kids can even try their hand at the old-fashioned art of spinning yarn from the wool cut from the sheep at Brookgreen. The entertainment has yet to be set for the event, but last year’s event included a puppet act as well as a toe-tapping bluegrass band. And if all that fun makes you build up an appetite, you’ll also be able to purchase some tasty food, including barbecue, sandwiches and snacks.

Brookgreen Gardens is one of the most popular attractions on the south end of the Grand Strand. The nearly 1,000-acre property is full of themed gardens, gorgeous sculpture, trails and even the Lowcountry Zoo.

The property that is now the gardens was at one time four rice plantations. Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington purchased the land and created the gardens in order to display Anna’s sculptures, which were widely recognized to be some of the most accomplished works of their kind during her time. It is now home to the world’s biggest collection of figurative sculpture in an outdoor setting.

Brookgreen is lovely any time of year, but autumn is a favorite. The gardens haven’t yet gone into hibernation mode, and the weather is perfect for strolling outside. Plus, you won’t have to battle with summer crowds! So whether you make it down for the hayrides and harvest-time fun of the festival or not, plan to visit Brookgreen if you’re in the area this fall.
