Jamaican Restaurant Opening in Pawleys Island

Eric Sutherland may be an experienced Jamaican chef, but until Mama Rue’s Blues Garden Restaurant & Lounge opens in Pawleys Island in a few weeks, he is hefting a paintbrush instead of a spatula.

The chef, a native of Galina, Jamaica, who has lived in the U.S. since 1979, became friends with Steve and Marrue Bleau (rhymes with bow) when they frequently patronized Sutherland’s restaurant in St. Petersburg, Fla., called the EZ Jamaican Cafe. The cafe was a popular place for anyone who wanted authentic and simple Jamaican food at low prices.

The Bleaus have worked in the restaurant industry for many years, and they moved to Pawleys Island five years ago. When they decided to open a restaurant in Pawleys Island, they asked Sutherland if he would like to be their chef.

He would, and he moved to Pawleys Island about a month ago.

The building that is being transformed into Mama Rue’s is at 9737 Ocean Highway, across from Indo Thai.
